These cryptic bacterial forms are prominent in mice treated with the antituberculosis drug isoniazid, suggesting a role in post-chemotherapeutic relapses. Thus, the amplification of bacterial phenotypic heterogeneity in response to host immunity and drug pressure may contribute to tuberculosis persistence.
